Anniversary Flowers: What to Give for 20 to 30 Years of Marriage

There is something beautiful about celebrating a wedding anniversary with flowers.

Every year represents another chapter in a couple's story — another year of shared memories, changes, challenges, laughter and love.

And while most people know about the traditional anniversary gifts — silver for 25 years, gold for 50 — fewer people know that certain wedding anniversaries are also traditionally associated with flowers.

So if you're celebrating a special anniversary between 20 and 30 years of marriage, what flowers should you choose?

Let's take a look.

20th Anniversary — Asters 🌸

The 20th wedding anniversary is traditionally associated with the aster.

Asters are delicate, star-shaped flowers that come in beautiful shades of purple, lavender, pink and white.

They are often associated with wisdom, patience and lasting love — qualities that feel especially meaningful after twenty years together.

Twenty years is a remarkable milestone.

By this point, a couple has shared two decades of everyday life, celebrations, changes and memories. The aster's delicate appearance combined with its rich symbolism makes it a beautiful choice for marking this chapter.

And we love that asters don't necessarily create the traditional "romantic bouquet" that people might expect.

They can make an anniversary arrangement feel elegant, thoughtful and a little unexpected.

21st Anniversary — Make It Personal

Here's where anniversary flowers become more interesting.

Unlike the 20th, 25th and 30th anniversaries, there isn't one universally recognized traditional flower for the 21st anniversary. Different modern lists assign different flowers to the years between major milestones.

And honestly, we think that's a wonderful opportunity.

Instead of following a rule, choose a flower that has meaning for the couple.

Perhaps it's the flower that was in their wedding bouquet.

Perhaps it's the flower they had in their first home together.

Or simply her favourite flower.

After twenty-one years, a bouquet doesn't need to follow a tradition to tell a beautiful story.

22nd Anniversary — Flowers with a Story

The same applies to the 22nd anniversary.

There is no single, universally accepted traditional flower for this year, which means you can make the arrangement much more personal.

Think about the couple rather than the number.

Do they love romantic roses?

Wild and natural flowers?

Elegant white blooms?

Bright, colourful arrangements?

The most meaningful anniversary flowers are often the ones that remind someone of a place, a moment or a person.

Tradition can be a starting point — but memories make the bouquet personal.

23rd Anniversary — A Bouquet That Reflects Them

By the 23rd anniversary, a couple has built an enormous collection of memories together.

So why not let the flowers reflect their personality?

A sophisticated arrangement of garden roses might suit one couple perfectly.

For another, it might be seasonal flowers gathered in a loose, natural style.

And for someone else, it could be the simplest bouquet of their favourite flowers.

There doesn't have to be a prescribed flower for every year for the bouquet to have meaning.

Sometimes the best choice is simply:

“These are the flowers I know you'll love.”

24th Anniversary — One Year Before Silver

The 24th anniversary is particularly interesting because it comes just one year before the famous 25th wedding anniversary — the Silver Anniversary.

This can be a beautiful opportunity to create something that hints at what's to come.

Soft white flowers, silvery foliage, pale blush tones or elegant neutral shades can create a sophisticated arrangement without making it feel like the 25th anniversary has arrived early.

And if you know the couple's wedding flowers, this is a wonderful time to bring some of those original flowers or colours back into the design.

25th Anniversary — Iris 💜

And then comes one of the great anniversary milestones:

25 years of marriage.

The Silver Anniversary is traditionally associated with the iris.

The iris is a striking flower — elegant, sculptural and impossible to overlook.

It is traditionally associated with qualities such as faith, hope, wisdom and admiration, making it a particularly meaningful flower for twenty-five years together.

Purple and blue irises are especially beautiful in anniversary arrangements, but there is no reason to limit yourself to one colour.

For a 25th anniversary, we love the idea of combining iris with elegant white flowers and subtle silvery foliage.

The result can feel sophisticated, timeless and worthy of such an important milestone.

26th Anniversary — After the Silver Celebration

After twenty-five years, the next anniversary doesn't have to compete with the Silver Anniversary.

The 26th anniversary is a chance to return to something more personal and intimate.

Perhaps choose flowers in the couple's wedding colours.

Or recreate a small detail from their original wedding bouquet.

Or simply choose flowers that are in season and particularly beautiful at the time of the anniversary.

Because one of the nicest things about anniversary flowers is that there is no need to repeat the same style every year.

Twenty-six years can look completely different from twenty-five.

And that's part of the fun.

27th Anniversary — Celebrate the Life You've Built

Twenty-seven years together is not just a number.

It's nearly three decades of shared life.

For an anniversary like this, we love the idea of a lush, abundant arrangement — something that feels generous and celebratory.

Garden roses, seasonal flowers, delicate foliage and beautiful texture can create an arrangement that feels luxurious without being overly formal.

And if you know the recipient's favourite flower?

Use it.

There is no better symbolism than giving someone something you know will make them smile.

28th Anniversary — Think Beyond Tradition

By the 28th anniversary, you don't need a traditional flower list to tell you what to choose.

In fact, many of the popular anniversary flower charts simply don't assign a universally accepted flower to every year between the major milestones.

So instead of asking:

“What flower is for year 28?”

we might ask:

“What flowers tell their story?”

That could be the flowers from their garden.

A flower from a memorable trip.

A colour they both love.

Or something completely new that represents this particular chapter of their life.

29th Anniversary — One Year Before Thirty

The 29th anniversary is a lovely moment because it's the last year before another major milestone.

One year away from thirty.

You could make the arrangement a little more special, perhaps incorporating some of the flowers or colours that will be meaningful for the couple's 30th anniversary.

Or you can simply celebrate the 29 years already shared.

Because every anniversary deserves to be celebrated — not only the round numbers.

30th Anniversary — Lilies

And then:

Thirty years.

The 30th wedding anniversary is traditionally associated with the lily.

Lilies are elegant, graceful and dramatic — flowers that naturally make an arrangement feel special.

White lilies are a classic choice, but blush and other soft shades can create a warmer, more contemporary look.

For thirty years together, a generous arrangement of lilies combined with beautiful greenery can make a wonderful statement.

And there is something particularly fitting about celebrating three decades with a flower that has such a strong presence.

Do You Have to Follow the Traditional Flower?

Absolutely not.

The traditional anniversary flowers are a beautiful idea, but they are not rules.

In fact, different sources use different lists, especially for the years between the major milestones. The most consistently cited traditional flowers in this 20–30-year range are aster for 20, iris for 25, and lily for 30.

For the years in between, we think the most meaningful approach is to make the flowers personal.

Your anniversary bouquet could include:

The flower from your wedding bouquet.

Your partner's favourite flower.

Flowers from your garden.

The flowers that were blooming when you first met.

Or simply flowers that make you think of them.

Because after twenty, twenty-five or thirty years, your story matters more than any list.

A Flower for Every Chapter

Perhaps that's what makes anniversary flowers so beautiful.

They don't have to be the same every year.

Your relationship changes.

Your life changes.

Your home changes.

And your flowers can change with you.

The traditional flower can give you a starting point — an aster for twenty years, an iris for twenty-five, a lily for thirty.

But the most meaningful bouquet is the one that says something about the two people receiving it.

Because flowers don't just celebrate the number of years.

They celebrate everything that happened during those years. ❤️

At Sweets & Florals Sisters, we believe anniversary flowers should feel personal. Whether you want to honour a traditional flower or create something completely unique, we can help you turn the number of years you've shared into something beautiful.
